This Just In - Men Want Beauty, Women Want Money

September 5th, 2007

Hmmm…This is interesting.  According to a new, international study…men are most attracted to physical appearance when looking for a mate (or a mate for the night), while women are more drawn to wealth and material goods.

This explains a lot.  However, next time, I would urge the University of Indiana to just ask me first prior to spending the money to make this study happen.  I could’ve given them the answer for free.

Confessions of a College Callgirl

September 3rd, 2007

I’m going to go out on a limb here and just say that this will be the best headline ever posted here.  May as well retire now.

Anyway…this is a fascinating blog.  This woman basically put herself through college working as a prostitute.  She’s an excellent writer, and the posts are compelling.  Aside from the obvious titillation factor that I will confess to, she is really writing about the human condition.  There is much insight into men and what makes them tick as you read through her entries.  In addition, you grow to respect and admire this tough; independent, and smart woman.

Some of the text is certainly “not safe for work”, but there’s no pornography or any kind of graphic advertising at all.  If you have an hour or so and you’re looking for an interesting diversion that just might teach you something  about our fellow man…I highly recommend it.

Check her out here.

Remember the Game - “Quarters”

September 2nd, 2007

For those of us in the over 40 group, the drinking game of “Quarters” is remembered (or, sort of remembered form some drunken haze) very fondly. The objective being to bounce a quarter into a cup of beer and then assigning that beer to be drunk by someone in the game (Usually the women you were trying to get drunk get to know better). Of course, if you missed, you had to drink. There were lots of other rules that escape me now…I think it’s been over 20 years since I’ve played. We used to play quite a bit, however, I have NEVER seen anything like this guy. I’m glad I never had to come up against him.

Check it out here.

Please note that there is some not safe for work content on this site, but it’s worth a click if you remember that game at all.

Men’s Health - Things you actually SHOULD eat

September 1st, 2007

Most of the men’s health information that gets all he press is usually focused on what you Can’t eat.  I came across a great read being served up by CNN International, but actually coming from Oprah.com (I’m not even linking it, as I’m sure we can all agree…you should not go there).  Anyway, forgetting the source for a moment, there is actually some great information there.  It includes the obvious fruits and vegetables, but has a few nice surprises in there including: tomato sauce, coffee!!, red wine, and some very interesting information on aspirin for those of us over 35.

Very good read, and highly recommended…check it out here.

Thursday Night Lights - High School Football

August 31st, 2007

I was really happy watching football last night.

My son is a freshman in high school this year. He is the starting safety for his JV Football team. The “correct” version of the phrase I used in my title is “Friday Night Lights”, named for the fact that the Varsity Football teams play under the lights on Friday nights. However, I think the JV team needs a slogan like that too. They, of course, play on Thursday nights.

Some background on me to understand my thoughts in context…I was not a high school football player. Football is not my favorite sport. I am not that “Glory Days” (Springsteen reference) guy that lives through his son’s adventures on the field. I wouldn’t care if he plays sports at all.

I think that as we get to our middle age (sigh), we spend a lot of time thinking about happiness. Am I happy? What is happiness really? What makes me happy? Am I happy with the choices I’ve made? Etc. We search for those moments that are uncluttered with these questions. Those moments that just “are”. The ones where you have that completely satisfied and calming, content feeling of knowing that…at this very moment…you are happy.

For me, one of those times is watching my son play football.

I was in love with Jaime Sommers (The Bionic Woman)

August 30th, 2007

Bionic Woman on NBC this Fall

Wow, I feel better admitting that. I suspect I’m not alone. I was ten years old when I first saw her. I had already been hooked on the Six Million Dollar Man, so it wasn’t a big stretch for me to become a Bionic Woman fan as well. I was a little young to understand it at the time, but I was clearly smitten. I had my first major crush on a TV star who was about 15 years older than me. I had all but forgotten about this, but NBC’s introduction of the new series this Fall made me remember. I’m glad I did, I suspect this information may be very important in my ongoing therapy. The Details About Coffee Drinks

August 30th, 2007

Cafe Mocha Make Up

I found this Illustrated Guide to Coffee Drinks oddly entertaining and informative. With a Starbucks about to open in my garage, just about everyone’s daily routine includes some kind of coffee beverage. For us over 40 crowd, I suspect many of us are drinking plain old “coffee”. Clearly, though, these variations on the coffee theme are gaining popularity everyday. If you, like me, can’t ever remember the difference between a caffee latte and an espresso macchiato (or even how to spell these).

At the very least, please check this out and memorize it before your next trip to LA or something.

Californication Review

August 29th, 2007

Californication

The new series, “Californication” staring David Duchovny just premiered on Showtime and it’s a winner.

If there’s a better new series on TV for the over 40 male, I can’t imagine what it could be. I’m really hoping that it’s not just me here; That all the men watching really want to be Duchovny’s character, Hank. He’s a “one hit wonder” writer whose best seller (“God Hates Us All”) was just completely commercialized into a Kate and Tom summer blockbuster. This does not make him happy. He moved to L.A. from N.Y. and hasn’t been the same since.
